Association between altitude and patent ductus arteriosus in preterm newborns from EpicLatino network in the period 2015 - 2020.

Abstract

Introduction: Several studies have been carried out in the United States, Europe, and Asia on the effect of altitude on the cardiovascular system, but there are not many studies in Latin America, even though it is one of the regions with the most significant variation in altitude due to the changes caused by the Andes Mountains. This is why we want to study the effect of altitude above sea level, since it is believed that newborns born at higher altitudes have a higher risk of persistent ductus arteriosus than those born at lower altitudes.


Materials and methods: Observational, retrospective, and analytical study in which the records of the EpicLatino database were used in the period from 2015 to 2020.


Results: 1243 patients were obtained, 52% were male and 48% female. Gestational age has the most important risk factor, OR 0.51 (0.02-0.03 CI). 62.2% of the units were at an altitude lower than 2000 meters. Altitude and years of study did not modify risk according to logistic regression.


Conclusions: The occurrence of PDA is inversely related to gestational age, with a higher incidence in preterm infants the lower the gestational age, while altitude does not seem to exert any effect.
