Gender dysphoria: a view from pediatrics

Abstract

Gender dysphoria refers to an imbalance between anatomical structures and individual’s sexual identity. This is reflected in different areas both the social and medical aspects. Socially, we got to start by saying that people with dysphoria experience a disagreement with their biological sex, which will trigger various problems when it comes to interact. Problems finding a stable partner, affection problems or work problems. Psychologically, adolescents are increasingly subjected to discrimination, harassment, persecution. However, it has been shown that early and timely intervention, there is an improvement in terms of emotional and behavioral problems. Additionally, we will find the importance of sexual differentiation, commanded by the SRY gene and the entire cascade that descends from there. We then find different syndromes from the genetic point of view associated with gender dysphoria, for example, androgen insensitivity syndrome and alpha-5-reductase deficiency that we will explain in this article. Treatment should always be carried out in the company of a multidisciplinary team; in preadolescent patients we can find three approaches: therapeutic model, attentive waiting and affirmative model, when we have the case of adolescent patients it can be started from the early social transition.
